Houston Happenings: Shell Houston Open Weekend

Last week, my brother and I took our dad out to the Shell Houston Open on Good Friday.  The Shell Open is now always Easter Weekend and the weekend before the Masters, so it makes it a good tournament to watch.

My dad was an avid golfer and when I was little taught me the game.  I grew up playing golf and earned a college golf scholarship, so golf is something that is special to me and something my dad and I (and my brother) have always enjoyed together & had in common.  He rarely missed a tournament of mine.  My dad is in poor health now; he can’t play golf and can’t walk around the course, so we wheeled him around in a wheelchair and I think he really enjoyed it.

We were able to see Ernie Els and Phil Mickelson tee off on #1 and watch several groups finish up on the 18th green.  Overall it was a great day & one of my favorite annual Houston events.  If you are looking for a fun hole to hang out on, my favorite is the 16th green gallery.  Everyone bets/cheers on the caddies to see who makes it over the bridge first.  It’s a fun hole (maybe it’s the close proximity to the beer tent)!!

Save the date for next year: March 28th, 2016-April 3, 2016

Where to check out Christmas Lights in Houston

Christmas Picture

Looking for a way to get in the holiday spirit or are you just a sucker for all things Christmas??  Check out these neighborhoods & locations in Houston to find great Christmas Lights displays!

1. Woodland Heights – Join the weekend block party for “Lights in the Heights“. Bring the kids, a rolling cooler, comfy shoes and walk the neighborhood on foot and check out all the neighborhood lights. December 13th

2. River Oaks – You can do the drive yourself or get a group together to drive through this lovely neighborhood and some of the most exclusive homes in Houston. Lots of gorgeous, professional displays to see here.

3. Candlelight Estates/Shepherd Park Plaza – I drove through this neighborhood right after Thanksgiving and the neighborhood was getting everything all set up.  Every home has tons of lights on display!

4. Zoo Lights @ The Houston Zoo – Always a holiday favorite, the Houston Zoo offers a great display with their Zoo Lights!

5. Prestonwood Forest – I have never been through this one, but I keep hearing about it. This neighborhood is off of 249 near Cypresswood.  Could be worth the short drive to see the lights!

Where to Eat in Houston – December

Each month CultureMap puts out a new article of Where to Eat Right Now in Houston.  I love this list.  It makes me happy to hear of all the new restuarants opening in Houston.  I consider myself pretty hip to the new restaurants (or maybe I’m not that cool now that I just said hip), but this is probably one of the first times I had not actually already been to one of the restaurants on the list!  I am definitely planning on trying Hearsay on the Green as I LOVE the Hearsay located in the Market Square area across from Hotel Icon (it’s been a downtown staple even before market square really made it’s comeback). Have you tried any of these?

1. Robard’s Steakhouse (The Woodlands…too far north of Houston proper for me to try)

2. Amalfi (Galleria)

3. Kitchen 713 (Second Ward)

4. Doc’s Motorworks (Montrose)

5. Alli’s Pizzaria (Heights)

6. Dak & Bop (Museum Area)

7. Beirut Fine Lebanese Cuisine (Washington Ave)

8. Hearsay on The Green (Discovery Green)

9. Hubbell & Hudson (The Woodlands)

10. Yaki Snack Attack (Food Truck)
